Area Code 539 History and Coverage

Area code 539 was introduced in 2010 as an overlay to Oklahoma's existing 918 numbering plan area. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission opted for the overlay solution due to the predicted exhaustion of available 918 numbers, making the current 918 area to stay whole without being split into geographic areas. The new 539 area would go into service starting April 1, 2011.

The 539 overlay relief area code has a large footprint of 918 numbering plan area covering the same region. These include the Tulsa metropolitan region, the Arkansas river region around the Muskogee city, other towns northwards towards the Kansas border and Grand Lake. There are also regions south into central-eastern Oklahoma such as the McAlester region. The region covered by 539 is largely the same that was previously covered by 918 area code since 1953.

This has not been an example of re-numbering boundaries as there was no change of 918 numbers. 539 area code only provided another set of numbers for the same region. Both these area codes observe the Central Time.
