Area Code 918 History and Coverage

Area code 918 entered service in 1953, when Oklahoma’s original statewide 405 numbering-plan area was divided to give eastern Oklahoma its own code. The new area code placed Tulsa at the center of a service region that extended across much of the state’s eastern side, linking the growing Tulsa area with communities toward the Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas borders and south into the Oklahoma hills and river valleys.

The geographic boundaries of Area Code 918 stayed the same through all following changes to Oklahoma's numbering plan. The area of the code includes not only Tulsa but also such communities as Broken Arrow, Owasso, Bartlesville, Muskogee, McAlester, Tahlequah, Miami, and Poteau. The coverage of most of eastern Oklahoma allows Area Code 918 to cover both urban and rural communities in the Central Time Zone.

In the late 2000s, the supply of telephone numbers under Area Code 918 was about to be exhausted. On January 4, 2010, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission approved overlay area code 539 to be assigned to the whole area of 918. The area code became operational on April 1, 2011, providing additional numbering capacity without changing the territory of Area Code 918. Since then, 918 and 539 provide phone services for the same part of eastern Oklahoma using both area codes for telephone numbers.
