Area Code 557 History and Coverage

Area code 557 was implemented in 2022 as an overlay area on the longtime 314 numbering plan region in eastern Missouri. It provided additional telephone numbers to the area without changing the geographic area served by 314. 314 had a more historical role in the national plan: it was one of the original area codes for North America, introduced in 1947 and covering a large area in the eastern portion of the state.

Later boundary changes narrowed 314’s reach. Area code 573 was created by a geographic split in 1996 for much of eastern and southern Missouri outside the core metropolitan district. Area code 636 followed in 1999, taking territory west of the remaining 314 service area. Those splits left 314 concentrated around the older urbanized part of the Missouri side of the metro region.

The 557 overlay did not create another geographic division. Instead, it joined 314 in the same compact territory, reflecting the continuing need for number assignments in a heavily developed regional center. The territory lies along Missouri’s Mississippi River frontage, opposite the Illinois state line.
