Area Code 314 History and Coverage

Area code 314 entered the North American Numbering Plan in 1947 as Missouri’s original code, when one designation covered the entire state. That statewide arrangement did not last. In 1950, the new 417 code separated southwestern Missouri from 314. Later population growth and the expansion of telephone service led to further geographic divisions. In 1996, 573 was created in a split that placed much of central and eastern Missouri outside the metropolitan core into a separate numbering area. Another split followed in 1999, when 636 was assigned to outer parts of the Missouri-side metro region, including St. Charles and Jefferson counties.

Those changes gradually narrowed 314 from a statewide assignment to a more concentrated urban territory. The code now shares its service area with 557, an overlay added in 2022 rather than a new geographic division. The overlay provides additional numbering capacity within the same established territory. After the successive splits, 314 remained tied to Missouri’s eastern river corridor, where the Mississippi River forms the boundary with Illinois.
