Area Code 559 History and Coverage

Area code 559 was introduced in 1998 after splitting from 209 because of the geographic split of Fresno and other regions to the south, including communities towards Merced and Stockton. This happened because at that time the telephone numbering plan in California needed to be updated in order to provide more telephone numbers to areas which were growing demographically and in terms of their services. The area served by the new area code 559 was composed of Fresno, Kings, Madera, and Tulare counties.

This split was based on the geography of the region in terms of where the valley was located, rather than a particular municipal boundary. The territory included regions of the valley floor, the Sierra Nevada foothills to the east of the region, and the Coast Range farther to the west. This put county seats, agricultural communities, and expanding inland populations under a single numbering scheme.

In 2023, due to the need for additional numbering capacity, California regulators approved area code 357 as the overlay of 559 territory. Area code 357 was implemented in 559 territory in March 26, 2025. The difference between the previous split of 209 and current overlay is in the geographic territory of the area. Area 559-357 still belongs to Pacific Time Zone California.
