Area Code 562 History and Coverage
562 was introduced on 25th January, 1997, due to splitting off the southern portion of area code 310 through geographic split. Area code 310 was itself formed out of 213 previously, and this was due to increasing demand of telephone numbers in Los Angeles basin area. Rather than introducing another area code over the same territory, California used geographic split to introduce a new area code, 562.
The 1997 split occurred as part of the greater reforming of Southern California area code assignments in the 1990s. Increased residential services, business telephone connections, and early wireless growth placed demands on the existing area codes. In numbering plan terminology, 562 became a separate code as a result of geographic split, whereas 310 continued to serve the remaining portion of its former territory. Eastern limit of 562 reaches Los Angeles–Orange County border.
