Area Code 571 History and Coverage

Area code 571 is an overlay that went into effect in 2000 in the area of Northern Virginia that had already been using 703 number format. It resulted from long process of dividing Virginia territory originally designated under 703 area code which took place in 1947. When there was an increase in the population and telecommunication use, 540 code area was developed as a result of geographic split made in 1995 and took away western and central parts of the state out of 703 coverage. Geographic split of 757 took place the following year when it separated Hampton Roads and eastern coastal region.

As the consequence, 703 became concentrated around the Washington metropolitan area of Virginia. Instead of splitting that territory into smaller portions once again, new overlay added another number designation to that area. Thus, more telephone numbers were created in the area affected by federal employment, businesses, and suburbanization of the area in the late twentieth century. Area Codes 571 and 703 belong to the same numbering region but not to separate geographic regions.

The numbering area ranges from the established inner suburbs up to outward growth zones of Fairfax County, Loudoun County and Prince William County. The east part borders the District of Columbia on the Potomac, while the western part includes towns near Dulles and Loudoun County border.
