Area Code 703 History and Coverage

Area Code 703 was originally issued to Virginia in 1947 under the early North American Numbering Plan as the first area code for the state, covering all of Virginia. As more numbering plan regions were created, Area Code 804 was formed from parts of the original 703 region in 1973. The coverage area of Area Code 703 shrunk further in 1995 with the creation of Area Code 540 through the geographic split.

The remaining Area Code 703 territory became the numbering code of the densely populated Virginia suburbs of Washington. The geography of the Area Code 703 follows the Potomac River on the northern border of the region, continuing to the western direction through the Fairfax County and extending into the Loudoun County and the Dulles corridor. Further to the south, it extends to Prince William County where suburban developments exist along the roads connecting to the capital.

An overlay Area Code 571 was added in 2000 in the same Northern Virginia numbering territory as Area Code 703. The two area codes serve the same geographic territory without separating the geographic region into different segments. Tysons and the Dulles corridor are among the key landmarks of the western part of the Area Codes 703 and 571 territories.
