Area Code 574 History and Coverage
Area code 574 was introduced in 2002 as one of the three geographic splits in the state’s previous numbering area of 219. The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission adopted the split plan in 2001, where the state’s previous north Indiana territory was split up into three separate areas, each serviced by the respective numberings of 219, 574, and 260. In this regard, the middle part was allocated 574, northeastern 260, while northwestern 219. This is a split and not an overlay, where the original boundaries of 219 were changed, creating separate numbering areas.
The change was necessary due to the need for additional telephone numbers in northern Indiana. As per the North American Numbering Plan, a geographic split is made when there is a need for relief from a previous numbering plan. When doing the splitting plans, the boundaries were changed such that Rolling Prairie, La Porte, Westville, Union Mills, and Hanna stayed under 219 instead of 574.
The current 574 territory covers most of the state’s north central strip from Michigan border southward to Logansport and Warsaw area. The area code represents the St. Joseph Valley and surrounding counties which are bounded by highways, railroad, manufacturing plants, universities, and county seats. Most of this region uses Eastern time zone, especially South Bend and Elkhart region.
