Area Code 577 History and Coverage
Area code 577 entered into service in 2014 to provide personal communications services and other applications within the North American Numbering Plan that require non-geographic numbering resources. The allocation of 577 was in line with previous assignments of codes such as 500, 533, 544, and 566 for services not based on any local telephone territory. In addition to being allocated for use in a growing metro area or along a state border, area code 577 has become a separate pool of codes to be used in services whose user or device or service profile could transcend a single physical location.
The numbering framework changed in 2012 when the service description for the former 5YY personal communications resource was expanded to include emerging non-geographic applications, including machine-to-machine communications. That broader approach recognized that some telecommunications services do not fit the traditional model of a number associated with a particular community, county, or exchange area. Area code 577 was among the codes designated for that category before its activation.
