Area Code 585 History and Coverage
New York’s 585 numbering plan began in 2001, when the state divided the former 716 territory to create a separate code for the Rochester-centered portion of western New York. The change left 716 with the Buffalo and Niagara Frontier side of the earlier service region, while 585 took the eastern and southeastern portion. This was a geographic split rather than an overlay, with the two codes assigned to different territories.
This division of the code territory occurred due to the necessity of obtaining more telephone numbers from the already long-established regional network. This particular code has been in existence since 1947, when it was included in the original North American Numbering Plan.
This particular area is delineated geographically by the lake of Ontario, Genesee River valley and Finger Lakes. It stretches to the southern shore of Lake Ontario and continues to the south towards the north Finger Lakes area.
