Area Code 716 History and Coverage
Area Code 716 was introduced in 1947 as one of the initial five numbering plan areas of New York. At that time, the area code covered a wider territory of western New York State than it does at present. Area Code 607 was created out of the eastern parts of area codes 716 and 315 in 1954, leaving a smaller territory to area code 716.
Another significant event took place in 2000, the geographical split of 716 area was authorized by New York, and in 2001 area code 585 was added to cover the territory of Rochester and adjacent areas. The rest of 716 territory remained situated around the western edge of the state, covering Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, and Canadian border areas.
Demand for additional telephone numbers in area code 716 led to another important development in 2022, namely, New York Public Service Commission approved creation of new area code 624 as an overlay of the existing 716 area, and this new area code will be implemented in 2023. In contrast with the previous geographic division of area code 585, area code 624 is an overlay area.
