Area Code 606 History and Coverage
Kentucky received 606 in 1954 through a geographic split of the statewide 502 numbering plan, creating a separate code for the eastern half of the Commonwealth. At that point, 502 remained with western Kentucky. The arrangement connected Ohio River counties in the northeast with the Appalachian Plateau and the Cumberland Mountains farther south. It also included a substantial section of central Kentucky before a later reduction.
Growing demand for telephone numbers led to another change in 1999. State regulatory bodies decided to use geographic split and not overlay, and in 2000, the new 859 area code was established for the western half of the old 606 region. 859 would include Lexington, Bluegrass Region, and Northern Kentucky, leaving 606 for the eastern half. This way, the current area code is reserved for eastern uplands of the state and the south-central mountain region.
The remaining boundary follows a varied landscape rather than a simple county line; Kentucky’s Public Service Commission has noted that area code boundaries do not exactly follow county borders. Its footprint includes communities near the Ohio state line, coalfield counties along the Virginia and West Virginia edges, and the Cumberland Plateau toward Bell and McCreary counties.
