Area Code 859 History and Coverage

Area code 859 went into effect on April 1, 2000, after a geographic split involving the 606 area of Kentucky. This change took place since prior to this date, 606 covered a significantly larger portion of Kentucky state. A specific number of counties were thus allocated to 859 and left 606 unchanged in most parts of eastern Kentucky.

The change occurred during a period when states were adding codes to provide more numbering capacity without extending a single code indefinitely. In Kentucky, 859 became part of a revised map that placed the inner Bluegrass and a group of Ohio River counties along the northern edge outside the remaining 606 territory. The boundary assigned one portion of the former 606 footprint to a new code.

This was a split, not an overlay. That distinction matters historically because the 859 territory was removed geographically from 606 rather than receiving an additional code over the same service area. The new code’s footprint links central Kentucky with the state’s northern border, while 606 remains associated with much of the eastern coalfield and mountain country. Along the northern edge, 859 reaches Kentucky communities on the Ohio River opposite the Cincinnati area.
