Area Code 615 History and Coverage
Area code 615 was established in 1954 through the geographic split of the original numbering plan area 901 of Tennessee, whereby area code 615 encompassed Middle and East Tennessee while 901 covered the Western parts of the state. This enabled all areas of the state east of Tennessee River to have one code during an earlier era of the numbering plan.
A large boundary adjustment took place in 1995, which divided the eastern section of area 615 to form the new area code 423 that covered the cities of Chattanooga, Knoxville, and the Tri-Cities among others in the eastern region of Tennessee numbering plan. The second geographic split occurred in 1997 to form area code 931 that included the outer portions of Middle Tennessee region. Cities like Clarksville, Cookeville, Columbia, and Tullahoma were allocated area code 931.
This left area code 615 with only the Nashville region with smaller geographic boundaries centered around Davidson County and adjacent counties along the Cumberland River region. Later, due to numbering demands, Tennessee regulators adopted the new area code 629 as an overlay instead of splitting the region geographically. NANPA put area code 629 into use on March 28, 2015. The 615 and 629 area codes occupy the Nashville-centered Middle Tennessee numbering region while 931 occupies most of surrounding region.
