Area Code 629 History and Coverage

Area code 629 was implemented in 2015 after Tennessee adopted it in order to form an overlay in the current 615 numbering plan territory. The change supplied additional telephone numbers without carving a separate geographic district from the established service area. Its arrival followed decades of adjustments to Tennessee’s original numbering arrangement. In 1947, 615 was one of the original North American Numbering Plan codes and initially covered the entire state. Later changes placed 901 in western Tennessee, 423 in eastern Tennessee, and 931 in part of the remaining 615 region. By the time 629 was introduced, 615 had become concentrated around the state’s central core.

Area codes 629 and 615 have been assigned in the same numbering-plan region. This approach addressed the need for numbers while at the same time observing the boundaries established in the former geographic divisions. This area code serves the counties of Williamson, Rutherford, Sumner, and Montgomery extending to the northern part of Middle Tennessee.
