Area Code 626 History and Coverage

Area code 626 was established in 1997 owing to the geographic partitioning of the 818 area code. Before the partition, the area code 818 itself was established in 1984 as a result of splitting the large 213 area code whose territory originally covered a considerable part of Southern California. The new area code became the sixteenth area code of California established due to the growing demand of telephone numbers in the state.

The 626 territory developed around the settled communities of the San Gabriel Valley, extending from the mountain-front corridor through places such as Arcadia, Monrovia, Alhambra, San Gabriel, El Monte, and West Covina. Its boundaries generally follow the valley’s established urban pattern rather than the coastal and central Los Angeles districts served by other codes. The San Gabriel Mountains form a clear northern geographic edge for much of the territory, while the area reaches south and east across densely developed portions of Los Angeles County.
