Area Code 818 History and Coverage
Area code 818 was established in 1984 by means of a geographic split of 213 that was the code of a much larger geographical area of Los Angeles County before that time. The original coverage area of this code was the San Fernando Valley and San Gabriel Valley because of rising numbers demands in Southern California.
In 1997, another geographic split led to the introduction of area code 626 that covered most of the San Gabriel Valley. That change left 818 centered on the valley portion of Los Angeles County that it serves today. Numbering demand continued as wireless, business, and residential services required more telephone assignments. The California Public Utilities Commission approved a 747 overlay in 2008, and 747 began serving the same territory in 2009.
Within the North American Numbering Plan, 818’s development follows the broader evolution of Los Angeles County from large legacy service regions to smaller geographic areas and shared overlays. The 818/747 region sits northwest of central Los Angeles, with the Santa Monica Mountains along much of its southern edge and the San Gabriel Mountains to the north.
