Area Code 628 History and Coverage

Area code 628 was assigned in 2015 as overlay of 415 and provided extra numbering capacity within the existing 415 service territory. Introduction of area code 628 came after years of evolution of once extensive 415 area. In North American Numbering Plan of 1947, 415 covered big part of Northern California until further division limited its borders. Area code 510 was split out of 415 in 1991 to cover most of the East Bay, and area code 650 was split in 1997 to cover most of the Peninsula and Silicon Valley areas. As a result, 415 became concentrated into small area of the Bay Area.

Area codes 628 and 415 cover the same territory but do not form separate geographic area. It is intended for the development of numbering resources in densely populated and developed area that has high demand for residential, business, wireless and data services. It differs from East Bay territory across the San Francisco Bay and from Peninsula area in the south. The northern part of this area is the lower North Bay, and western border touches the Pacific Coast.
