Area Code 415 History and Coverage

Assigned in 1947 as one of the original North American Numbering Plan codes, 415 initially covered a much larger portion of Northern California’s coastal side than it does now. California began with just three original area codes: 213 in the south, 415 along the coast and Bay Area, and 916 across much of the north and interior. The early boundaries reflected the state’s smaller postwar numbering map.

Changes began in 1959 with the separation of the North Coast from 415 by 707 and the creation of 408 for the territory south of the Bay, including Santa Clara Valley and Monterey Bay. Thus, 415 became more focused on the Bay itself. Another split took place in 1991 when 510 was created for most of the East Bay towns. Finally, 650 separated from 415 in 1997, taking Peninsula territory.

The rest of territory received 628 code in 2015 in overlay fashion without further geographical division. Such scheme allowed keeping 415 border unchanged and adding new code to existing service territory. The border of 415 ends near Bay shoreline not far from Golden Gate with 510 on the other side of bay and 650 right to the south of 415.
