Area Code 636 History and Coverage
This area code was implemented in 1999 by way of splitting the existing 314 numbering plan area of Missouri due to lack of numbering resources for the older plan. At the time, Missouri Public Service Commission reports referred to the 314 area as being under a jeopardy plan, which is an official procedure applied when telephone-numbering resources become depleted. Accordingly, 314 has been retained for use in St. Louis and the central urban part, whereas 636 has been allocated to the rest of the territory.
Its territory includes all of St. Charles, Jefferson, Franklin, and Warren counties as well as parts of Lincoln, Montgomery, and western St. Louis counties. This area covers the major roads such as Interstate 70 in St. Charles County and Interstate 44 in Franklin County to Union and Washington. The western boundary includes the Warrenton area in Warren County, while the southern boundary encompasses the cities in Jefferson County bordering the metro.
