Area Code 640 History and Coverage
Area code 640 was introduced in 2018 as an overlay on New Jersey’s existing 609 numbering plan. The addition provided more telephone-number capacity without replacing the established 609 code. Its creation followed increased demand for numbering resources tied to mobile service, business communications, and other connected devices.
609 has been around for a lot longer than the 640 area code. It came into existence in 1958 following the division of the 201 area which was in existence then in New Jersey, putting much of the state's southern side under the 609 area code. 1999 saw the formation of area code 856 by splitting 609 geographically making 609 mostly exist in central and southeast New Jersey. The 640 area code overlay did not create any geographical split.
Introduction of area code 640 entails the use of overlays to increase the number capacity within an already existing service area. Service area of area code 640 includes the Delaware river region, pine barrens, and Atlantic coastal plain of New Jersey.
