Area Code 609 History and Coverage

Area code 609 was assigned in 1958 through a geographic split of New Jersey’s original 201 code. When the North American Numbering Plan began in 1947, 201 covered the entire state, making 609 an early step in dividing statewide telephone numbering into more manageable regional service areas. Its initial territory extended across much of southern New Jersey and included portions that later received separate numbering arrangements.

The second geographical split was done in 1999, when area code 856 was separated out of southwestern part of 609 zone. It resulted in creation of the current borders between 856 and 609 areas, where 856 became servicing Delaware River side of South Jersey, whereas 609 stayed serving central and southeastern territories of the old area. This was caused by the necessity of obtaining more numbers for the growing telephone system of New Jersey.

In 2018, overlay code 640 was assigned to cover 609 region. This splitting differed from the previous 856 split because it didn't involve transfer of communities into a new zone, but just introduced another set of numbers in the current area. Thus, now 609 and 640 codes are servicing the same zone while 856 is servicing southwestern part of the 609 region.
