Area Code 650 History and Coverage

The area code 650 came into use in 1997 as a result of the geographic split of the then area code 415, which was one of California’s original area codes since 1947. The split involved the separation of the Peninsula-oriented region of the old 415 territory from the other two, that is San Francisco and Marin County that remained with the 415 area code. This was during the period when the numbering areas of Bay Area had been undergoing divisions into smaller service areas.

The geography of the 650 territory gives it a unique boundary. It covers the Peninsula area south from communities at or near the county line to include most of San Mateo County as well as the northern portion of Santa Clara County. The coverage of the area code stretches in the Bay-side corridors of Redwood City and Menlo Park as well as on the coast, where there are Half Moon Bay, Moss Beach, La Honda, and Pescadero west of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
