Area Code 659 History and Coverage
Area code 659 was introduced to Alabama’s numbering plan in 2022 as an overlay to the 205 region. Area code 205, however, goes back to 1947, and was one of the first numbers assigned under the North American Numbering Plan, meaning that this region of Alabama is one of the oldest regions in the plan. Area code 659 retained the original 205 geographic area while assigning new phone numbers to the region.
Development in this region of Alabama has occurred along several economic corridors rather than developing according to any single pattern of growth. Development has taken place in areas around the Black Warrior River, along the coal mining communities in the interior of the northwestern portion of the region, as well as along transport corridors which pass through the center of the state. These growths have generated a need for phone numbers in the area.
The 205/659 region encompasses geographic areas influenced by the foothills of the Appalachians, valleys, and uplands to the west of the Black Warrior River basin. The number history of this region links a newer overlay code to a number which was established at the start of the North American Numbering Plan in 1947.
