Area Code 205 History and Coverage

Area code 205 was introduced in 1947 as the original North American Numbering Plan code of Alabama. Over many decades, area code 205 served all of Alabama, which was logical at the time since there was just one area code for Alabama. Increasing telephone demand necessitated a division of the original area. Thus, in 1995, the new area code 334 was introduced as the result of geographical splitting for southern and eastern Alabama. Another split occurred in 1998 and resulted in the introduction of area code 256 to cover much of northern and eastern Alabama.

The above splits left area code 205 with its current west-central Alabama jurisdiction. It covers the Birmingham-based industrial region, which goes across Jefferson and Shelby counties, as well as continues west through Tuscaloosa County all the way to the Mississippi state line. It covers parts of the Appalachian foothills and the country around Birmingham too.

However, as there were requests for more telephone numbers, area code 659 was added to area code 205 in 2018 by the Alabama Public Service Commission. Area code 659 started being used in 2019. It differed from earlier geographical divisions in that it did not entail any reassignment of communities to the new area code 659.
