Area Code 661 History and Coverage

Area code 661 was introduced in 1999 through a geographic split of California’s 805 area code. The change occurred during a period when several established California codes were being divided to provide additional numbering capacity. Much of the former 805 territory’s inland northern section moved to 661, while the 805 code remained associated with the Central Coast and Ventura County.

The 661 area includes agricultural towns in the valley floor around Delano, mountain towns in Tehachapi and Frazier Park, and desert towns like Ridgecrest. The area also includes several travel paths that connect the southern San Joaquin Valley and the Los Angeles area, including one approaching Tejon Pass.

Regional growth has taken different forms across the territory. Bakersfield developed as a major center for oil production, agriculture, government services, and transportation, while the high desert and mountain communities have remained more dispersed. The numbering boundary reflects those inland connections and the separation from California’s coastal 805 service area. Ridgecrest, near the China Lake area of eastern Kern County, sits among the code’s more remote desert communities.
