Area Code 805 History and Coverage

The area code 805 was established back in 1957 due to geographic split of 213 area code that used to be part of California’s North American Numbering Plan area. At first, 805 code covered rather wide strip of coastal and inland territory north of Los Angeles area becoming the second code to emerge from the original 213 area code territory. In 1999 805 area code territory was split again giving birth to 661 area code.

Currently 805/820 numbering plan area covers much of the San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, with tiny portions touching Monterrey and Kern counties as well. Geographical coverage of this area includes the Highway 101, Santa Ynez Valley, coastal plain near Oxnard, as well as several inland towns close to county borders.

Due to number conservation strategies including thousands-block number pooling it was possible to postpone need to implement new numbering resources for many years. However, due to the decreasing number of available prefixes the California Public Utilities Commission approved 820 overlay in 2017. 820 area code started to cover the same territory starting from 2018 year.
