Area Code 662 History and Coverage

662 area code was introduced in 1999 due to the geographic split of 601 which used to serve as the original area code of all of Mississippi. 662 is the second geographic split introduced to Mississippi after the 1997 introduction of 228 area code serving the Gulf Coast. The geographic split created an area code that would serve communities impacted by the Memphis metropolitan edge, Delta agriculture, university towns, manufacturing centers, and historic county seats.

The territory extends from the Tennessee border through the Delta and northeast Mississippi, with portions reaching into central Mississippi. Its regional position places it next to Tennessee’s 901 and 731, Arkansas’s 870, Louisiana’s 318, Alabama’s 205/659 and 256/938, and Mississippi’s 601/769. Those boundaries reflect the region’s connections across several state lines as well as its internal ties along major north-south and east-west transportation corridors.

Increased need for telephone numbers led to the Mississippi Public Service Commission allocating 471 as an overlay area code for the 662 numbering region in 2024. The allocation of the new area code 471 will be effective on January 30, 2026, when the availability of the numbering resources of 662 expires.
