Area Code 702 History and Coverage

Area code 702 was established in 1947 as one of the first numbers under North American numbering plan and applied to the whole of Nevada, as it was appropriate to have the same area code in the state that had relatively small population. As the population and economy expanded and there were a lot of commercial activities in Nevada's southern region, the situation changed in 1998. The split between two area codes left Nevada's northern region with 775 area code, while 702 was retained in Nevada's south with places such as Reno, Carson City and Elko being included into the new area code.

Due to an increase in number demands, changes were again brought about. In 2014, area code 725 started operating as an overlay in the same southern Nevada region of 702. The overlay created another area code but did not bring any changes to the previously set boundaries between the two areas codes. This means that both area codes work in the region close to the Nevada-Arizona border and the Colorado River region. It can be clearly seen from the division of Nevada between the two area codes 702 and 775.
