Area Code 725 History and Coverage
The introduction of the area code 725 occurred on June 3, 2014, following the approval by the regulatory authorities of Nevada in November 2012 in order to provide continued supply of phone numbers within the geographical territory of area code 702. Instead of dividing this area into separate geographic codes, Nevada authorities have chosen to use 725 as an overlay code for 702, and thus both the codes are present in the same numbering plan area.
The change followed a longer reshaping of Nevada telephone geography. For decades, 702 covered the entire state. In 1998, most of Nevada outside Clark County moved to 775, leaving 702 focused on the state’s southern population center. That earlier split separated the Reno–Carson City area and much of rural Nevada from the Clark County numbering area.
As a result of the increasing of the population of southern Nevada, it became necessary to increase the number capacity, but the authorities did not decide to establish geographic code and instead chose overlay code 725. The coverage area of this code includes almost all of Clark County, beginning with the Las Vegas Valley and finishing in the northern-eastern part of the state, Moapa Valley and Mesquite, and then down the Colorado River to Laughlin.
