Area Code 719 History and Coverage

Area Code 719 was introduced in 1988 after Colorado’s first 303 numbering plan area was divided geographically. Prior to that moment, Area Code 303 was used throughout the state after the introduction of the North American Numbering Plan in 1947. The introduction of the new area code was a result of the necessity of having more phone numbers to meet the requirements of Colorado’s increasing population, institutions, and economic activity.

The boundaries of the area code show an uneven settlement structure of the area. Thus, the area code covers Arkansas River Valley, most of southeastern plains and San Luis Valley. Moreover, the area code includes mountain and foothill areas on the southern part of the state where transportation networks and centers of population are quite dispersed due to great distances between them.

In 1995 area code 970 was introduced through the split of 303 area code for northern and western part of Colorado and Area Code 719 remained as before. It resulted in such geographical division of the two area codes where Area Code 719 covers southern and eastern regions of Colorado whereas Area Code 303 is connected with the rest of the state, including Denver.
