Area Code 303 History and Coverage
The code 303 was assigned back in 1947 and was an original North American area code, covering the whole state of Colorado. At that time, there was only one statewide code in the state, as the population was much smaller and there was not as developed a telephone network. Growth along the Front Range led to the need for more numberings in the central part of Colorado due to residential development, business activity, and government functions.
The first geographic change occurred in 1988, when a new area code 719 was created by splitting the region into southern and eastern parts of Colorado. Another split was made in 1995 when the code 970 became the code for northern and western Colorado, excluding parts of the Front Range metropolitan corridor. As a result, the code 303 became an area code for the central part of Colorado.
The demand for numbers rose even after the creation of the code 970; as a consequence, the 720 overlay appeared in 1998 and the 983 overlay was created for the same numbering region. The territory left to 303 covers the Front Range at the foothills, at the place where plains and Rocky Mountain urban corridor meet.
