Area Code 726 History and Coverage
Area code 726 was implemented in 2017 after approval by the Texas government of the area as an all-services overlay to the already-existing 210 numbering plan area. Instead of dividing the region into different zones, the new area was added on top of the previous numbering plan without creating new territories. This meant that the same geographical coverage of 210 was preserved while providing the region with another numbering resource.
In 1992, the 210 area code was introduced by splitting it from the 512 area code geographically. Then 210 covered the larger area of south and central Texas than it covers now. In 1997, the 830 area code was split out from the outer parts of 210, leaving 210 to serve the inner cities and suburbs of central Texas. This reorganization had determined the coverage zone of 726 later.
The overlay was approved in 2016 and put into use in October 2017. It is included in the North American Numbering Plan, according to which the overlay introduces a new area code into an already existing coverage zone, but does not split the communities into new zones with their own numbers.
