Area Code 728 History and Coverage

Area code 728 became operational on March 10, 2023, and was introduced in order to relieve the pressure on area code 561. The deployment of 728 comes after several earlier numbering changes in southeast Florida. Area code 561 originated in 1996 after a geographic split of 407, caused by growing demands for telephone numbers. In 2002, the northern part of 561 located on the Treasure Coast was separated into area code 772.

By April 2021, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator had estimated the exhaustion of the available numbering resources in 561 territory in the third quarter of 2024. After receiving new demands, this estimate was adjusted in September 2021, and now the territory is expected to exhaust its numbering supply in the third quarter of 2023. The industry's petition suggested an overlay, and the authorities of Florida agreed.

The arrangement retained the established 561 territory while adding 728 as another source of numbers within the same plan. Historically, this territory combined Atlantic side developed communities of Palm Beach County with its western inland including agriculture area around Lake Okeechobee.
