Area Code 561 History and Coverage

Area code 561 was introduced on May 13, 1996, through the splitting of area code 407. In the beginning, it operated outside Palm Beach County as well, covering counties of Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River and including such popular parts of Florida as Palm Beaches and much of Treasure Coast within the same numbering plan area. This happened in the period of increasing population, businesses, and telecommunication services in southeastern Florida that led to the increased need for phone numbers.

The second geographical shift occurred in 2002 when area code 772 split off from area code 561. Palm Beach County kept 561, whereas the northern counties were transferred into 772 territory, thus leaving the code associated only with one county and not with the extended geographical area it used to cover initially due to the population growth and the increased need for phone numbers.

The most recent change took place in 2023, when area code 728 has become an overlay to the already existing code 561 area of Palm Beach County. As opposite to the split, where the territory becomes separated from the current numbering plan area and gets a new area code, an overlay means adding a new code to the same geographic area. The western part of the county borders the shore of Lake Okeechobee.
