Area Code 737 History and Coverage

Area code 737 was introduced in 2013 as an overlay of the 512 numbering region which exists in Central Texas since 1947 when it was assigned under the original North American numbering system. The older 512 region covered a vast portion of south-central Texas at one time but after splitting twice to cover 210 (in 1992) and 361 (in 1999), the 512 region was shrunk to cover only the state capital region and its counties.

The post-war government jobs and University of Texas played their role in the growth of the core, while further development of residential areas expanded this core in the Hill Country and routes leading to San Antonio. This region comprises of upland limestone terrain west of the Colorado River drainage basin and flat country east of it. The main part of this region consists of cities in Travis, Williamson, Hays, and Bastrop counties. Both 512 and 737 use Central Time which applies to other parts of Texas.
