Area Code 743 History and Coverage
743 area code was introduced in 2016 in order to provide additional numbering capacity for the already existing numbering plan region of 336. The area code 336 was originally established in 1997 via geographic split of the territory belonging to the old code 910; it provided coverage of vast territory of north-central Piedmont of North Carolina.
This part of North Carolina was historically oriented towards the railroad routes, manufacturing hubs, and highway corridors. Production of textiles, furniture, higher education, health services and logistics were among major economic activities here. Increasing population and growing economic activity required more telephone numbers to be assigned.
