Area Code 336 History and Coverage

The implementation of the area code 336 took place in 1997 as a result of geographic split from the area code 910. This move was made with the intention to create a new area code for an area which had grown too large to remain within North Carolina telephone numbers. Thus, area code 336 served as the cover for the north-central part of the state. The counties included were Rockingham, Caswell, Stokes, and Surry – counties along the Virginia state line as well as some areas of Yadkin River basin. Further, the area code included southern part of the region which consisted of Alamance and Randolph counties. Boundaries of this area were set according to industrial centers, county seats and highway locations.

In 2016, an overlay of the area code 743 was put to use for the same area for the sake of providing more telephone numbers without eliminating the use of area code 336. This region comprises of the historical furniture production centers of the High Point area, tobacco producing industry around Forsyth County and the college city of Elon located in Alamance County. One of its cities, Mount Airy is located in Surry County near Virginia state line and the western edge comes close to Blue Ridge Mountains' foothills.
