Area Code 747 History and Coverage
Area code 747 went into service in 2009 as an overlay to the already existing 818 numbering plan area. Approval of the new arrangement was done in 2008 by the California Public Utilities Commission, due to exhaustion of the supply of 818 telephone-number prefixes despite previous conservation measures. With the introduction of 747, new numbers could be issued without splitting the old 818 region geographically.
This area code is part of a long history of changes to the phone numbers in the greater Los Angeles region. Area code 818 itself was introduced in 1984 through geographic split from 213. Again in 1997, 626 was split out and 818 was left to cover San Fernando Valley only. Even by the late 1990s, number conservation measures had been adopted to stretch the supply of 818 before any other code was necessary.
