Area Code 762 History and Coverage
In 2005, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator assigned 762 to provide additional numbering capacity for Georgia’s existing 706 region. The Georgia Public Service Commission approved an all-services distributed overlay on June 23, 2005, and the new code became effective on May 16, 2006. Rather than dividing the established 706 territory into separate geographic sections, the overlay placed 762 across the same service area.
The 762 assignment followed a period in which available telephone numbers in the 706 region were becoming limited. The original 706 code had already served this broad section of Georgia for years, so retaining its boundary avoided a geographic reassignment of established communities. The resulting 706/762 territory stretches from northeast Georgia toward the Alabama line and includes northwest Georgia’s corridor near the Tennessee border.
