Area Code 706 History and Coverage

Code 706 became operational in 1992 due to splitting of 404. This was done to allocate telephone numbers in other regions besides Atlanta, which were part of the area covered by 404. This area code is Georgia’s first split. At the time, Georgia required allocation of phone numbers in areas beyond the metro Atlanta region. Thus, the area code’s initial geographic territory contained areas whose economies and population profiles were different from each other. While one end was characterized by the university community, others included industrial centers along the western Georgia border.

The 706 area code service area includes portions of the Piedmont, Blue Ridge foothills, and Chattahoochee Valley with roads to Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. An overlay 762 was added to 706 territory in 2006 in order to give extra number capacity but keeping the same geographic territory. The service area of paired 706 and 762 consists of many decades of development in the region with college towns, border areas and county seats. Along the Chattahoochee, the territory extends to the Alabama line; in the northeast, the territory stretches to mountain counties.
