Area Code 763 History and Coverage
In 2000, Minnesota assigned 763 through a geographic split of the existing 612 territory as the Twin Cities region required more telephone numbers. The change separated much of the metro’s northern and western suburban territory from the area that retained 612. At the time, 612 had long been associated with a far broader portion of the Minneapolis–Saint Paul region, and the division reflected continued residential and commercial development beyond the central cities.
The territory of 763 includes suburbs on the Anoka County side of the metro stretching towards Northwest along U.S. Highway 10 and U.S. Highway 169. Furthermore, it includes the territory near Elk River and reaching into Wright County. Therefore, the split resulted in a need for separate numbering because of the growth of the territory covered by the old 612.
A later numbering-plan change added 924 as an overlay to the same 763 service territory. Rather than creating another geographic division, the overlay provided an additional code for new number assignments while leaving the established regional boundaries in place. The 763 area remains tied to the northern and western side of the Twin Cities metropolitan pattern, including the corridor around Elk River.
