Area Code 769 History and Coverage

Area code 769 went into service on March 14, 2005, as an overlay to the current 601 Numbering Plan Area. This change occurred after prior restructuring of Mississippi’s 601 region by the creation of the 228 number for the Gulf Coast region in 1997, and then by the 662 number taking the northern Mississippi region in 1999. Instead of dividing the leftover 601 region further, a new code was allocated over the same geographic area.

Geographically, this region is spread across much of the state's interior and south, excluding the three coastal counties covered by 228. In the west, the region covers the Mississippi River counties of Vicksburg and Natchez; in the east, the region stretches towards the Laurel area, Meridian, and to the Alabama border. The south end of the region covers Pine Belt counties of McComb, Brookhaven, and around Picayune, while the central section covers counties along I-20/I-55 corridors.

The 601/769 arrangement reflects how Mississippi’s telephone geography narrowed from a single statewide code to several regional numbering areas. Area code 769 remains paired with 601 rather than being confined to a separate district. The shared territory links river counties, the central uplands, and the Pine Belt, with the Gulf Coast remaining outside its boundaries.
