Area Code 774 History and Coverage

The overlay 774 was implemented into the territory of 508 numbering plan in 2001. The previous code had been created back in 1988 as a result of the geographic split of 617 and thus splitting of Massachusetts off the Boston area code. Thus, implementing of 774 code provided additional numbers within the same territory defined by 508.

The common territory emerged under the impact of various regional patterns. While the Blackstone Valley and adjacent mill towns became related to the industrial development of central Massachusetts, some areas along the I-495 corridor acquired new residential housing and business parks in the later decades. In its southeastern portion, the territory encompasses Cape Cod and the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, combining both seasonally and constantly occupied places. Even though they vary in terms of density and development, they still belong to one and the same numbering territory 508/774.

The development of the numbering plan in Massachusetts proceeded with the growing need of the population and businesses outside of the Boston area. Code 774 became one of its aspects, preserving the existing territory of 508 and gaining additional numbering resources.
