Area Code 508 History and Coverage

Area code 508 was created in 1988 through the geographic split of Massachusetts area code 617. The new area code gained coverage of eastern Massachusetts area outside the central Boston area, reflecting the need for more phone numbers due to growth of business entities in the area. It initially encompassed areas that would be later on split, leaving a large central and southeast service area.

Another change to the boundaries of the region happened in 1997, when area code 978 was carved out of the region via splitting from 508 area code. As a result of the move, north-central and northeastern Massachusetts became under 978 area code, while 508 area code shrunk to its current range – central Massachusetts, MetroWest, Blackstone Valley, South Shore, and the Southeastern coastline. The 508 area code included communities with unique historical backgrounds, going from old industrial centers around Blackstone River to fishing/maritime centers close to Buzzards Bay.

In 2001, another area code 774 was introduced to serve as an overlay over the same territory as 508 area code. Together, both area codes are used in the region. The area covered stretches from the inland communities of the border areas of Connecticut and Rhode Island all the way to coastal communities of Plymouth and Bristol Counties, Cape Cod, and the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.
