Area Code 786 History and Coverage

786 area code was established as an overlay area code to the already existing 305 numbering territory in 1998 due to the growing demand for new telephone numbers in southeastern Florida. The overlay of 786 made possible the use of two area codes in the same geographic region instead of the geographical split of the region into two different territories for satisfying the demand for new telephone numbers because of the population increase, businesses, cellular phones, and other telephone services.

The old 305 area code gives insight as it is one of the original area codes allocated to Florida in 1947, which was later changed so that only a certain geographic portion of the state was covered by the code. In the latter part of the twentieth century, the remaining portion of the 305 service region had a great need for new numbers. The allocation of 786 provided numbering resources without splitting geographically neighboring regions sharing regional ties.

Geographically, the 305/786 region covers Florida’s southeastern tip and reaches all the way into Monroe County. Its coverage consists of the coastal plain of the Florida mainland and continues southwestward via Overseas Highway through the Florida Keys. The region works on Eastern time zone. Monroe County gave the numbering territory its unique shape since the county territory follows a chain of islands beyond the mainland.
