Area Code 305 History and Coverage
In 1947, 305 was assigned as Florida's original North American Numbering Plan area code, covering the state before Florida received additional codes. That statewide arrangement reflected the plan's early design, which often assigned one code to an entire state. As the state's telephone network and population grew, geographic splits steadily reduced 305's footprint. The introduction of 813 in 1953 separated the west coast and southwest from the original territory. The 904 split in 1965 assigned a different code to northern Florida, and 407 later took over much of central Florida. Together, those changes followed the expansion of telephone service across Florida's populated coastal and inland corridors.
A more decisive change came in 1995, when area code 954 was created through a split serving Broward County. That change set 305's mainland northern edge south of the Broward line. In 1998, 786 was added as an overlay to the remaining 305 territory, rather than taking another geographic piece from it. The two codes therefore cover the same established service region. The present territory includes Monroe County's island communities, extending along the Overseas Highway to Key West.
