Area Code 810 History and Coverage

Area code 810 was introduced on December 1, 1993, through the division of Michigan’s 313 numbering plan area territory to increase the number capacity. With this addition, Michigan got its first new geographic area code after 1961 due to an increased need for telephone numbers as a result of expansion in the area in terms of residences, businesses, and mobile phones.

The original 810 region covered a much larger share of southeastern Michigan than it does today. A geographic split in 1997 created area code 248 for Oakland County, reshaping 810’s western boundary and concentrating the code farther east and north of the Detroit suburbs.

Later, in 2001, area code 586 was introduced through the second geographic split, where a good portion of Macomb County joined the newly introduced 586 numbering plan area, hence leaving 810 concentrated mainly on Genesee, Lapeer, St. Clair, and other areas of the Thumb.
