Area Code 248 History and Coverage

Area code 248 was introduced in 1997 through a geographic split of 810, which had been created from 313 only a few years earlier. The change addressed continuing demand for telephone numbers in southeastern Michigan’s suburban communities, where residential growth, corporate offices, and expanding mobile services increased pressure on the existing number supply. The new code covered a developed territory north and northwest of Detroit that had previously used 810.

A later overlay, 947, was added to the same service territory, allowing both codes to serve the region without another geographic split. This approach preserved the established boundaries while making additional numbers available in an area with sustained demand.

The 248 region developed alongside the postwar expansion of Detroit’s northern suburbs, with employment centers and commercial districts spreading along major highways. Its geography includes communities around Pontiac and the Interstate 75 corridor, extending through a substantial part of southeastern Michigan’s suburban belt.
